Addison discusses the formation of the Order, including some of the precepts, charges, and regulations upon which it was based and by which these soldier-monks were expected to live, followed by a history of the part played by the Order in the defense and, eventually, the loss of the Holy Land, and closes with a lengthy discussion of the bizarre charges brought against the Order, and the trial and execution of most of its members.

Definitely now a standard and indispensable treatment of the subject - a sober account which avoids all of the spectacular speculations of many later accounts.
