From what I've seen the hat is the classic late 1800's style and the bullion cross puts it in the same time frame. The cross is bullion around the outer edge and then red felt in the middle. The bullion looks silver now but I don't know if it started out gold in color.

The cross is just on one side of the hat, the other side is empty, no indication tat there was ever one on this side. There are 2 ostrich feathers, a black one that is under the white one they are still nice and full.

It was made by The Henderson Ames Company of Kalamazoo, Mich. For a RJ Easton as it marked on the inside. I do not know what material the hat is made from, there is a lot of rub to the surface and there is material underneath so I'm thinking maybe a velvet? Again, a lot of the original fuzzy surface is rubbed off and it is a black material underneath. There is rub at the front cornersas seen in photos.

The lining and hat band are intact with not much use or soiling. The stitching is coming out along the sides of the hatband. I do not find a size tag but the inside measures about 22 1/4 around the inside of the hatband. Now for the super rare, exciting piece. A hood with the red cross painted on one side.

The hood is made of like a light oilskin type of material. It is a woven material with a shiny treated surface on the outside. It has a flap that comes down over the forehead and nose. It goes over the head and down the neck. 2 snaps on the front of the neck piece would have held it in place. The piece of fabric at the neck has evidently shrunk quite a bit as it is way to short for the snaps to be snapped around the neck now.

The snaps are in good condition. What would have been probably very white is now age yellowed. The fabric has gotten wrinkly and you can see where the outer treatment has come off when you hold it up to the light. There are no actual holes but again the finish has come off in places with age.
